'Free' Schools

Social enterprises are beginning to feature prominently in the running of ‘free’ schools, those run by independent organisations free from local education authority control. This Masterclass features Oasis Community Learning, a social enterprise that has sponsored eleven free schools. Through this they have demonstrated their commitment to helping children in under-served communities.

The session will cover the role that social enterprise can play in the education sector. In particular it will examine:

• How Oasis came to be involved in running schools.
• The techniques that Oasis have used to engage the local community.
• How Oasis have dealt with opposition to this model of school provision.
