Background:
• The project is aimed at ensuring a consistent approach to engaging with schools across the sub-region
• The aim is to employ a school engagement officer, hosted by Harrogate BC, who will work alongside the existing school carbon reduction officer employed by North Yorkshire County Council as part of a virtual team
• The officer will work alongside teachers and children in schools, assisting them in the delivery of a climate programme and jointly reviewing and improving the resources available to them as the programme develops
• The project will deliver a common resource pack, building on two existing packs produced by district councils, a series of training events for staff, headteachers and bursars and an Earth conference for students
• The project will also seek to utilise pupil power to influence parents and households
Delivery:
• A common resource pack
• Will equip teachers with the skills needed to effectively engage students and establish an ongoing support network
• Will support schools to reduce energy use and establish an ongoing support network
• Improved understanding among students facilitating long term behaviour change
• Raise the profile of climate change / energy saving within schools and the community
Outcomes:
• The work of the current Schools Carbon Reduction Officers in the County Council has demonstrated the high demand for such a service. This demand can not be met and is likely to grow as the Carbon Reduction Commitment is implemented and the likely reduction in the Display Energy Certification threshold includes more schools.
• The project will ensure that schools, who are critical both in terms of attributable emissions and in shaping the mindset of young people, are provided with the support needed to make an impact on climate change
• The project will seek to quantify the CO2 savings made by participating schools and assess the contribution to NI 185 and 186.
• It is felt that this model of working could be shared/rolled out across the sub-region
• Involving young people in the formulation of ideas and in an influencing capacity is seen as an innovative approach. Young people will be significantly impacted by climate change in their lifetime and involving them in developing the response seems entirely logical.
• The support networks that are established with schools will be ongoing and will help to facilitate learning between schools both in the sub-region and wider
• The package of measures described will be sustainable. A lot of work is required to develop the format, structure etc, but once this is in place it is envisaged that roll out of the work programme will be sustained beyond the life of RIEP.
