Background:
Hull CC took part in the MoF television programme which generated interest locally including offers of support, potential volunteers and requests for PIO to be introduced in the city. The scheme fits well with the existing healthy eating programme in tackling major health and inequalities and in meeting LAA targets for health improvements. Robust planning, finance and resources are needed to implement and sustain the concept. Match funding of 50% has already been identified.
Delivery:
Funding will develop a city centre food centre (with professional teachers) to focus specifically on improving the diet of children, young people and their families. PIO will be piloted through events and weekly sessions for local parents at each of the 19 Children's Centres; incorporation into the current MEND programme (aimed at city wide weight reduction); incorporation into the new One Hull LSP Sailing Academy initiative (aimed at NEETS) and work with schools, colleges, university businesses. Specific groups will be targeted including men, overweight and obese adults, children and young people, teenage parents and young offenders. Meeting the needs of minority ethnic groups will be explored.
Outcomes:
Community cooking leaders identified in each of the 7 areas of the city to produce a sustainable network of skilled, accredited practitioners and ambassadors (both voluntary and paid). Contributions to LAA targets and local strategic plans.
