Background:
Local Government is currently facing a series of workforce planning challenges. It is acknowledged that there is an ageing workforce and the statistics on diversity do not reflect that of our communities. Unless we look at the workforce of the future now, we will not be able to meet the needs of our communities in years to come.
This project has come about following extensive research into the perceptions of young people on both their understanding of local government and choosing a career in local government. The research was carried out by a number of organisations and each piece of research targeted a different age group/audience.
Delivery:
To engage with young people through various methods
• to give them an understanding of what local authorities are and what they do,
• to create a framework for young people to become community leaders
• to showcase local authorities, fire and rescue and police as employers of choice, working with schools, colleges and other relevant partners.
Outcomes:
• Marketing material which can be used by all schools and other educational establishments
• A toolkit for a Regional work Experience Programme • A toolkit for a Regional Work Placement Programme • A wider talent pool of graduates, school leavers and other young people seeking employment • A more user-friendly recruitment process for young people • Young people in the region with a better understanding of local government • More young people involved with their community • A workforce that reflects the diversity of the region • Young people who are in a better position to apply for jobs through work experience or work placements • Retention of young people already in local authority employment • Support for young people already working in local authority employment • Upskilled young people already working in local authorities. |
