Summary:
Young people like to meet up with each other and hanging out with your friends is part of growing up. But when young people have no designated place to meet, they often gather outside shops, at bus shelters or at other unofficial meeting points. This isn’t ideal for the young people and can be seen as a nuisance by other members of the community.
To tackle this issue the Safer Communities Service at East Riding of Yorkshire Council is developing 12 ‘hang out’ zones where young people can meet. The first three zones have now been installed.
The project:
The design of the shelters has been carefully considered to provide a safe space where young people can meet, even in poor weather conditions. The design also makes them easy to maintain and inspect. The positioning of the shelters has been specifically chosen to be far enough away from adults to be appealing for the young people whilst still being close enough if adult help is needed.
