Councillor Development

May 6, 2009 - Councillor Development

Building on successful pilot courses with Barnsley MBC and Kirklees MBC and following on from programmes delivered by the Humber Improvement Partnership (HIP), a post graduate programme for Elected Members has been developed. The programme combines the academic learning and support provided by the University of Huddersfield with the proven benefits associated with working/learning with councillors from other local authorities across the region. This has been well received, with 19 members studying for the certificate, seven studying for the diploma and a further two undertaking a dissertation leading to an MA in Public Sector Modernisation.

Accredited professional development modules for councillors are being developed by Barnsley MBC in consultation with member development officers and members across the region.

The Councillor Development Officer's Group, jointly supported by LGYH and IDeA is working with the other Northern Regions to design and deliver a Leadership Academy for Member Development Officers in May 2009.
