Communication Masterclass

May 11, 2009 - Communication Masterclass

The average ‘Place Survey’ communication score in Yorkshire and Humber is less than the average communication score across the country. Twelve out of our 22 authorities are performing below the national average in this aspect of their activities. Research shows a strong link between how well we communicate and resident satisfaction. The more people know about their local council, the more highly they rate it and the better they feel able to access its services. Communication is key and is a priority for improvement across the region.

The regional PR/Communications Network (representing councils, Fire and Rescue Services and the Police) have investigated performance in this context and how it can be improved. Members of the Network have worked together, supported each other, shared learning, best practice and innovation, and challenged each other. They commissioned a communications audit, which found variations in communications operations and an absence of any comprehensive mechanisms to raise standards across the board. The research also found that good public communication is not always at the heart of council and partner activities.

In 2008, Chief Executives agreed to a number of actions to improve communications, to directly impact on the performance of individual authorities and the region overall. YoHr Space is supporting development and delivery of a series of events for partners across Yorkshire and Humber Masterclasses will build visionary, ambitious, political and managerial communications leadership for Chief Executives, Leaders, Directors and Heads of Communications.
